Recent History
----------------------------
2004/05 Season; 20th in Coca Cola League 1
> The Dons managed to do the 'Great Escape' from what seemed an impossible predicament after being three points behind Torquay on the final day of the season. Come the end of the 7th of May following two goals from Gareth Edds (6, 84) either side of Dave Beresford's goal (65) meant MK Dons survived with a superior goal difference in place of Torquay who lost 2-0 away.
> MK Dons away record that season was disappointing to say the least which to be honest didn't change while we were in League 1. A 5-0 hammering away to Hartlepool in January highlighted this...with a 1-0 away at Colchester in September the only 3 points we bagged away from home until the end of March!
> Poor results at the start of the season cost Stuart Murdoch with a 4-1 loss at Bristol City being the final nail in the coffin! Jimmy Gilligan took temporary charge, however could only guide us to two 1-0 wins over non-league opposition in the FA Cup and a 1-1 against Peterborough in the League before he was replaced by former Luton, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Bristol City manager Danny Wilson...and as they say the rest is history.
2005/06 Season; 22nd in Coca Cola League 1
> With the Dons looking doomed by the end of March, the month of April showed us all exactly what we knew, we were capable to compete in League 1 but somehow just didn't! 4 wins in 5 games meant that the Dons took the trip up to Millmoor, Rotherham knowing that a win against Rotherham and anything but a win for Hartlepool would keep the Dons up! Deja vu eh? Sadly this time around things didnt go to plan and after more than 1,200 Dons fans sang thier hearts out for 93 minutes eerie silence fell in the Railway End as the fans felt the bitter taste of relegation! A hard fought 0-0 draw with Rotherham meant Hartlepool's 2-1 loss to Port Vale was insignificant as both us and Hartlepool along with Swindon and Walsall were condemed to the basement tier of the Football League.
> Again it was a tale of two teams, one at home...one away! we were capable of beating anyone at home as we showed in March when thanks to goals from Gary Smith and Scott Taylor we beat the runaway league leaders Southend United at home! However yet again an embarrassing away record including another 5-0 defeat, this time away to Huddersfield along with several other losses notably the 3-1 defeat to Swansea in January, Leon Knight scoring a hat-trick on his debut in front of the 38 travelling Dons fans.
> Danny Wilson lasted the season before being sacked as we were relegated to League 2. The club goes on the look for a manager, with names such as Alex Inglethorpe and Mickey Adams looking favourites.
2006/2007 Season; 4th in Coca Cola League 2
> Well a rollercoaster season is the only way to describe 2006/2007! Martin Allen took over after leaving Brentford. He quickly got spending some of Pete's cash and bought in players such as Lloyd Dyer, Sean O'Hanlon who were a pivotal part of the season. However its other transfers to which Allen will be held accountable. Two calamity goalkeepers in Adolfo Baines and Lee Harper, the 'reliable' defender Paul Butler, fit and ready Jamie Smith, Joe Tillen and the not so Junior Lewis! Still Allen guided us to the our most successful season in MK so far. Finishing 4th, our main issues were our leaky defence, our 4-0 and 5-0 defeats away from home to Peterborough and Rochdale respectively and our inability to beat the any of the top 3! Yet still on the last day of the season, it came down to one goal deciding which division the Dons played in the following season.....for the third season running! a 1-1 draw between Swindon and Walsall coupled with the Dons 3-1 win at home to Accrington Stanley meant MK headed to Shrewsbury for the Playoff semi final. A hard fought goalless draw in the last game at Gay Meadow and a below par performance and inevitably with Allen's playoff record a loss meant MK were compounded to a further season in League 2. not the way we planned to bid farewell to the National Hockey Stadium was it?
> Allen stayed only one year in MK of which he got the golden ticket of an offer from Milan Manderic's bankrolled Foxes. Being a Leicester University student here, I just couldn't get away from it, Allen seemed to be stalking me!
2007-2008 Season; 1st in Coca Cola League 2
> What a season, the Dons do the Double. Winkelman produces his greatest coup to date by bringing in former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince into the managerial hotseat, our third manager in 24 months. The reign starts with a home defeat to Bury followed by a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Macclesfield with Colin Cameron scoring a screamer in the 93rd minute.
> Away the Dons go and start sparking on a run which sends us top by October and regaining that position for the most of the season, only overtaken by Peterborough once or twice. A thrilling 2-1 win away at Peterborough in December has to have been one of the highlights.
> As we head further into 2008, the Dons beat League One runaway leaders Swansea on penalties to send the crowd ballistic and provide us with our first oppurtunity of playing at Wembley which we truly grasped by beating Grimsby 2-0 in the final taking a whopping 35,000 fans down to North London in the process.
> A thoroughly entertaining 3-2 win away at Stockport in April gifts us promotion which we capped off a week later by beating Bradford on thier home patch to claim the title, presented to us on the final day of the season at home to Morcambe in front of 17,500 fans. Truly memorable season including a club record and equalling a league record of 17 away victories. A change of fortune or what?
> Paul Ince departs for Blackburn Rovers in June leaving the Dons managerless for another summer.
2008-2009 Season; 3rd in Coca Cola League 1
> The Dons under former Chelsea and Italian international midfielder Roberto Di Matteo guide the Dons to thier highest finish since the relocation and renaming leaving the Dons fans with plenty to think about at the end of the season.
> An opening day defeat to eventual runaway winners Leicester was no harsh result as the Dons were taught a lesson the hard way on thier return to League 1, however it was to get better from there on with the Dons carrying on the winning mentality of the previous season and maintaining thier stronghold in the playoff positions. Yet again the Dons lose to Swindon and Peterborough at home as per usual but the Dons get to the end of the year in the automatic promotion positions and fans are starting to dream of back to back promotions.
> 2009 starts in the same fashion however the tide starts to turn at the end of February starting at home to Leicester City on the 28th. Its a game MK dominated despite conceding an early Matt Fryatt goal and the Dons took the lead through two Peter Leven strikes and looked to have won it. Added time was to prove costly and in the 97th minute Max Gradel hits an inch perfect free kick past Gueret to salvage a point. It was downhill from there, the Dons only winning one game in March, be it a whopping 6-2 win at home to Oldham, but draws at Yeovil and defeat at Leeds gave Peterborough momentum to keep hold of that 2nd automatic position which they cemented after the Dons lost at home to a Jabo Ibehre strike.
> The Dons go into the playoffs again, against a team beginning with S...again...who claimed thier position in the playoffs on the last day of the season...again...who finished more than 10 points below us...again! See a pattern??? Well it continued, after gaining a valuable draw away to Scunthore, the Dons were knocked out on the playoffs for the second time in three seasons after failing to finish off a team infront of the loyal home crowd! Tore Andre Flo the culpret who missed the all important penalty to condemn us to another season in League 1.
> Duly after commiting his future to the Dons and stating he wanted to 'build a career' here in MK, Roberto Di Matteo spread his fledgling wings and flew across to West Bromwich Albion leaving Paul Ince to return to fill the void.
